Returning to a new normal with a Learning Disability.
It goes without saying that the last year or so has been a challenging time for many. But rather than looking back over the last year, we’re looking forward to the new ‘norms’ that we will be facing every day. It is looking more and more likely that Covid-19 spread prevention measures will remain in place for, at the very least, the next few months. With this comes a whole host of new ways to live, learn and socialise and for those living with a learning disability comes a unique set of challenges.
So, what have we noticed about how these new norms are affecting people with a learning disability?
- Changes in routine
Changes in routine can be problematic for many people with a learning disability and the pandemic has changed a lot of these routines! With ever-changing guidance outlining how we live our lives, constantly adapting to these changes may be tough.
2. Reduced Socialising
Whilst the plan to re-open the country is in full swing, there will be some who find reuniting with people and groups difficult. As our online sessions slowly wind down, due to the demand in returning to face to face sessions, we are aware that some will find this easier than others. With this in mind, our team are on hand to help and where possible we will continue to offer services that work for all, so that everyone benefits from regular social activities.
The next few months have the potential to be as challenging as they are exciting for people with a learning disability. There will be reintroductions to friends and families bringing excitement and a sense of normality. In contrast, there are planned changes in national restrictions which stand to create challenging circumstances for many people with learning disabilities. At Dayspace, we hope we can support our customers through these changes, helping keep the focus on the positives of these new ‘norms’.
