Like many marked days in our annual calendar, Mother’s Day is a day of celebration. A day when we can, in normal times, get together with or remember our mums, to say thank you for everything they have done for us. Many mothers are an inspiration to their children and sometimes, unknowingly influence many aspects of their lives.
At Dayspace, when we think about Mother’s Day, we think about it in relation to the people we support.
Many people with a learning disability are cared for by their mothers throughout their adult lives and therefore have an extremely strong relationship with them. It’s a joy to see the love that our customers have for those dedicated mothers, whose strength and determination has enriched their children’s lives and as a result has allowed us the privilege of being a part of their lives as they become adults.
But of course, not everyone is lucky enough to have their mum around. Some may have lost their mum in recent years and others may never have met them. We should also acknowledge that not everyone has a good relationship with their mum and for all these reasons, not everyone may feel like celebrating Mother’s Day.
Around this time at Millsted Care, we encourage the people we support to think about the people who have had a positive impact on their lives. For those who have lost their mum, to remember the good times and to be thankful for that time spent together. For those with no memory of their mum, to celebrate another influential person in their lives, whether this be a family member, a carer or maybe someone famous who has made an impact on their lives.
Ultimately it is good to celebrate those who have cared and supported us, and we wish all mums a very happy Mother’s Day.
